Many of our patients wonder about wisdom teeth. What are they? Why do they need to be removed? Do they always need to be removed?

Wisdom teeth are your last teeth to come in and that usually happens between the ages of seventeen and twenty one. Wisdom teeth do not always need to be removed, but for most patients they do.

Some people go their whole life and never have their wisdom teeth removed. The reason is that when wisdom teeth grow in correctly, there is no reason for removal. The main reasons for wisdom teeth removal, is if there is not enough space for the teeth to surface or if the teeth are coming in at the wrong direction. This is the case for most people. A clear indication that wisdom teeth need to be extracted is when a person experiences pain when the wisdom teeth start to grow in.

It’s extremely important to consult a dentist if there are any evident changes when your wisdom teeth are emerging. Failure to remove your wisdom teeth when necessary could lead to pain, infection, cysts, tumors, damage to neighboring teeth, gum disease and tooth decay. If you consult Dr. Daniel Bade, DDS he can examine and x-ray your teeth to ensure that the proper steps are taken.

If you do keep your wisdom teeth, it is still important to have them monitored by a dentist frequently. Even if your wisdom teeth grow in correctly, there is still potential for damage. Be sure to floss and visit your dentist regularly.
